This was the strongest sensation the creature had felt since it woke. The world it opened its eyes onto was different — the vast, boundless blue thing was gone now, and so were the prey and everything else that had once surrounded it. A slower, gentler rhythm surrounded it instead; food had come easier than before. Still, some of the small creatures, absurdly overconfident, had tried to threaten it, and it had killed them on the spot — though they tasted terrible. These two now looked no different from the rest, but they moved fast, faster even than it could move through water, and that stirred up a fierce hunger in it: I will catch you. I will bite you. I will watch the red thing pour out of you right in front of me. The corners of its mouth curled upward, though it had no idea what that meant.
