One of China's four great folk legends, this story tells of an ordinary cowherd who falls in love with a celestial weaving maid. Their forbidden romance violates the laws of heaven, and they are torn apart by the gods — yet their devotion moves the Jade Emperor, who grants them one reunion each year on the seventh night of the seventh month, when magpies form a bridge across the Milky Way.
